Pupusas gem

For quite some time now, Robert has been saying that he wanted some good pupusas. In case you don’t know what they are, pupusas are a Salvadorean national dish, griddle cakes made of corn masa stuffed with different fillings such as cheese, beans or pork (chicharrón); the often come accompanied by pickled cabbage and mild tomato salsa. I met some Central American immigrants today and asked for their recommendations. And that’s how we ended up at “El Padrino” little restaurant in Southeast Calgary for lunch today. Talk about authentic: when we entered, nobody there was speaking English (staff or customers). 5 tables, all full, lots of take-out orders, cooks and waiters seemed very busy. Definitely not fast food, but so worth the wait. My chilaquiles and pork pupusas were perfect, very fresh and flavourful, spicy but not mouth burning, it all just hit the spot. Pupusas were a bit crunchy on the outside but soft and delicious inside. We will definitely go back to “El Padrino’.  And now we are thinking: maybe for one our next trips we should go to Central America? Yes, those pupusas were that good.
