Short trip, mouth-watering food
OK, yes, I am biased. But Robert isn’t, and we both LOVE food in Poland. This time, our trip there was very short, but we squeezed in many of my gastronomic favourites. This year, the Oscar nominees are:
1. Pączki (Polish donuts): those who know me know that my every trip starts and ends with those. No, until you have tried a Polish donut you don’t know donuts. See my early entry titled “Ode to Donut”.
2. Fava bean salad: made by my dear friend Asia
3. Zapiekanka (toasted bread with lots of toppings): this time, I did not have the traditional two-foot long one, so my son-in-law says that it doesn’t count
4. Fresh sourdough bread with smalec (lard): an appetizer offered by many restaurants
5. Zestaw surówek: set of salads, accompanies many dishes
6. Hungarian latkas with veal goulash: yes, this is a Hungarian dish, but we eat it every time we are in Poland, at the Balaton restaurant in Kraków. I used to go to that restaurant as a girl when I lived in Poland and regularly visited Kraków. The restaurant is still there, and they serve the same dish.
7. Pierogies: new variety tried this time, with goose meat and buckwheat in cranberry sauce. Yum!
8. Herring: in mango sauce and in strawberries. See one of my first entries, “To herring or not to herring”
9. Oscypki: smoked cheese made from salted sheep milk, typical for the Tatra mountains area, served sliced, grilled, with cranberries.
10. Gęsie pipki: goose stomachs. Delicious stew.
And the winner is… no surprise, it’s the donut, but the competition was tough.
